This week in the news JT clients were front and center. We’re proud to share their stories of impact.

Benefit Chicago

An innovative collaboration between The Chicago Community Trust, MacArthur Foundation and Calvert Foundation that aims to mobilize $100 million in impact investments for nonprofits and social enterprises in Chicago is bound to have a significant impact on our City. Explaining how it works requires a deep dive into social impact investing. To ensure Chicago media had the time to accurately understand this major investment, JT worked with the Chicago Tribune, Crain’s Chicago Business and the Chicago Sun-Times to talk with spokespeople before it was publicly announced. This resulted in substantive stories in all three papers, followed by supportive editorials. Chicago will greatly benefit from Benefit Chicago.

Morton Arboretum

Leading up to Arbor Day on April 29 — a day dedicated to the planting, caring for and honoring trees — JT worked with The Morton Arboretum to place stories about the importance of our region’s trees in a number of key media outlets, including The Chicago TribuneThe Daily Herald and WTTW.

Shakespeare 400 Chicago

“Yound cloud is almost in the shape of a camel. It may be cloudy, but every cloud engenders not a storm,” said Shakespeare, while giving the weather report on FOX’s Good Day Chicago. The Bard’s unconventional appearance came courtesy of JT’s Margaret Brennan, who was tasked with finding creative ways to generate media around the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. What can we say? Some ideas are crazy enough to work. Shakespeare’s weather report —“Friday night, the icy fangs, and churlish chiding of the winter winds – it will be chilly indeed” — was one of the wackier placements among many successful (and many more serious) media hits for “Shakespeare 400 Chicago,” a yearlong festival spearheaded by Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)

“A battle brews over nurse licensing in the digital age,” read the headline in the Wall Street Journal. That April 27th article was the direct result of work by JT’s Colleen Mastony, a former reporter who knows how to navigate a newsroom. The topic was complicated, but Colleen knew how to craft the pitch and frame the debate in a way that would grab a reporter’s attention and land the story in the pages of the nation’s highest-circulation newspaper. Our client, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), had hired us to generate media and build support around the Nurse Licensure Compact. Within hours of the story hitting the WSJ website, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed legislation that made Oklahoma a member of the compact. A good outcome indeed.

Step Therapy Legislation

With step therapy legislation at play in Kansas and Missouri, JT worked with several doctors, patients, patient advocacy organizations and local House Representatives across both states to place stories about the consequences that can result without protections from step therapy. Step therapy is when patients are required to try – and fail – on alternative prescription drugs chosen by insurers before coverage is granted for the drug originally prescribed. Among almost a dozen clips last week, JT helped organize an editorial board meeting with the Topeka Capital Journal, which resulted in this editorial.
